I have been searching for just the right piece to put above our piano. We previously had a large tree, which now sits above our fireplace, and then a large clock. I knew the piece had to be on the bigger side to fill out the wall, but I couldn’t quite decide what I liked. Finally I decided to frame some music pages. While searching through my piano music (I took lessons for 12 years and have quite a bit!), I found some old music magazines. The dates on the magazines ranged from 2000-2002. Obviously they weren’t doing much good sitting in a bin in the basement, so I decided the little bits of music inside would be perfect for a collage. The result ended up even better than I could have hoped!

Any music could be used for this, but I love the variation in color. I also love the antique look that came with the thin paper pages once they were glued on. I did include a piece of flute music I played for competition in high school (7 years of flute lessons too!). I used Mod Podge to attach the pages to a piece of plywood paneling we had left over from another project.

Once the music was attached, Ryan helped me add some trim (painted antique white). Once the frame was finished, I added a piece of burlap ribbon and a spring wreath. The ribbon is removable, so I can change the wreath with the season.

Music has been a big part of my life and now I enjoy this piano with the kids. Eventually they will learn how to play on the very same piano I learned on. This piano originally belonged to my great grandparents, so I’m happy it has a place front in center in our home.

This was the perfect Saturday project for a cold winter day. I love that it can be changed with the seasons, and the little pop of spring color is giving me hope that this winter will eventually end. We are looking forward to Spring, how about you?

  1. Love your original idea. I wish I had a wall by my piano to decorate. I have no shortage of music I don’t plan; in fact am doing a little “housecleaning” of it!
